UK Endangered Species - 31 Illustrations

Self Initiated

A series of 31 illustrations created over 31 consecutive days during lockdown, inspired by the Inktober challenge of producing a new illustration each day.

The project focused on UK mammals, birds and insects appearing on the IUCN Red List of threatened species. I was struck by how many familiar species - from starlings and butterflies to hedgehogs - are experiencing significant population declines. I wanted to explore a way of communicating this issue through a visually engaging, collectable series.

The visual style was inspired by vintage matchbooks, stickers and collectable cards, using bold shapes, limited colour palettes and simplified forms. Each species was reduced to its most distinctive features, set against an abstract, textured background to create a cohesive retro aesthetic.

Working within a single evening for each illustration encouraged a quick and methodical approach. Every image was drawn digitally in Procreate on an iPad, with colour used selectively to define highlights, shadows and key markings.

Following an encouraging response to the series on social media, I developed the 31 illustrations into an A2 lithograph print, bringing the collection together as a single piece. Shop a newly re-stocked range of cards, stickers and t-shirts on my collection page.
